What to Do After a Car Accident: A Step-by-Step Guide
EU Brokers Team28 March 2026 4 min read
Car accidents happen in an instant but the decisions you make in the hours afterwards can significantly affect your insurance claim. Follow this checklist to protect yourself.
At the Scene
- Check for injuries. Call 10177 (ambulance) or 10111 (police) if anyone is hurt. Safety comes first.
- Do not admit fault. Even saying "I'm sorry" can be used against you. Say nothing about who was responsible.
- Exchange details. Collect the other driver's name, ID number, contact number, vehicle registration, and insurance details.
- Take photos. Photograph the damage to all vehicles, the road layout, skid marks, and any traffic signs nearby.
- Get witness details. If anyone saw the accident, ask for their name and number.
Within 24 Hours
- Open a case at your nearest police station if the damage exceeds R5,000 or if there was a third party involved — most insurers require a case number.
- Notify your broker or insurer. Most policies require notification within 24–48 hours.
- Do not have the vehicle repaired before the insurer has assessed it.
During the Claim Process
Your broker will guide you through the required documentation. Typically you will need your driver's licence, vehicle registration papers, the police case number, and photos of the damage. EU Brokers clients can submit all of this directly through the client portal.
